Adult Medicine · Cardiology 01:24

A 58-year-old man has had 90 minutes of central crushing chest pain. His ECG shows ST elevation in leads II, III and aVF. The nearest hospital with a cardiac catheter laboratory is 40 minutes away. What is the most appropriate next step?

  1. Admit for serial troponin measurement
  2. Arrange CT coronary angiography
  3. Give aspirin and transfer urgently for primary PCI
  4. Book an exercise stress test
  5. Start oral beta-blocker and review in 24 hours
Explanation

This is an inferior STEMI. Primary PCI is the preferred reperfusion strategy when it can be delivered promptly, and a 40-minute transfer allows that. Waiting for troponins or further imaging only delays reperfusion.

About the exam

The AMC CAT MCQ examination in 2026: what you need to know

The AMC CAT MCQ examination is the first assessment on the Standard Pathway for international medical graduates (IMGs) who want to practise medicine in Australia. It tests whether your medical knowledge and clinical judgement meet the level expected of a newly qualified Australian doctor beginning supervised practice.

Exam format

You sit 150 multiple choice questions in 3.5 hours at a Pearson VUE test centre. Each question is a single best answer item with five options (A to E). The exam is a computer adaptive test (CAT): a correct answer is usually followed by a harder question and an incorrect answer by an easier one, so every candidate sees a different set of questions. You must answer every question, you cannot go back to change an answer and there is no negative marking.

Scoring and the 2026 pass standard

Results are reported on a scale from 0 to 500, and the pass mark is 250. Because the exam is adaptive, your score reflects the level of difficulty you can answer reliably, not a simple percentage of questions you got right. For sittings from 2026, the AMC slightly raised the underlying standard needed to reach that 250 score. In practice, the safest preparation is to aim comfortably above the pass line in every discipline.

What the exam covers

The AMC blueprint weights the exam across six patient groups: Adult Health – Medicine (30%), Adult Health – Surgery (20%), and Women’s Health, Child Health, Mental Health, and Population Health & Ethics (12.5% each). Questions also test three clinical tasks: data gathering, data interpretation and synthesis, and management.

Study plan

A simple 12-week plan for passing the AMC MCQ exam

A three-month subscription fits this plan exactly. Adjust the weeks to your own strengths, but keep the order: learn, then test, then repeat.

Weeks 1–4

Foundations: Medicine and Surgery

Half of the exam comes from adult medicine and surgery. Work through these subjects in untimed mode, read every explanation and keep a list of topics you get wrong.

Weeks 5–8

O&G, Paediatrics, Psychiatry, Population Health

Each of these carries 12.5% of the marks. Cover them all, paying special attention to Australian guidelines for screening, immunisation, ethics and mental health law.

Weeks 9–11

Timed mixed blocks

Switch to timed mixed-subject blocks at roughly 84 seconds per question. Re-attempt every question you got wrong the first time.

Week 12

Final review

Review your error list and high-yield topics, take one full-length practice session and rest well before exam day.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about AMC Question Bank

What is AMC Question Bank?

AMC Question Bank is an online practice question bank for the Australian Medical Council (AMC) CAT MCQ examination. It contains 1,680 exam-style multiple choice questions across all six AMC disciplines, each with a detailed explanation, so you can learn from every answer and measure your progress before exam day.

Is this the official Australian Medical Council website?

No. AMC Question Bank is an independent preparation resource and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Australian Medical Council. For registration, exam dates, venues and fees, always check the official AMC website at amc.org.au.

Who writes the questions?

Every question is written and reviewed by experienced medical professionals. Each one comes with an explanation of why the correct answer is right and, wherever possible, why each of the other options is wrong.

Can I try the question bank before I buy?

Yes. The free trial gives you 25 sample MCQs from different subject areas, so you can judge the question style, difficulty and explanations before choosing a plan.

Which subscription should I choose?

Most candidates do best with a three- or four-month study window. It gives you time to complete every question, read the explanations properly and repeat your weakest topics. The three-month plan is our most popular choice.

Is the subscription automatically renewed?

No. Every plan is a one-time payment with no recurring charges. You get unlimited access and unlimited attempts for the period you choose.

What happens if I do not pass the AMC MCQ exam?

If you do not pass the AMC MCQ examination, we extend your subscription free of charge for the same period you originally paid for, so you can keep preparing for your next attempt.

Can I upgrade my plan later?

Yes, you can upgrade at any time. If you upgrade within one week of your purchase, you only pay the difference between the two plans.

Did the AMC MCQ exam change in 2026?

The format did not change: it is still a 150-question computer adaptive test lasting 3.5 hours, reported on a 0–500 scale with a pass mark of 250. What changed is the underlying pass standard. For sittings from 2026, the AMC slightly raised the ability level a candidate needs to reach that 250 score. Our exam guide explains what this means for your preparation.

Can I study on my phone or tablet?

Yes. The question bank works in any modern browser on a laptop, tablet or phone, so you can keep practising wherever you are.
